Spies - Codes and Ciphers

Spies usually use what they call "ciphers" or "codes" to send messages to their partners. "Code" And "ciphers" are sometimes used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. A code is a subsitution for some words, while a cipher are scrambled messages, not a secret language.

Here are some classic 'ciphers':

1. The Cesar Shift Cipher - this is a simple alphabet cipher -but tricky to break without the key. Each letter is moved along by a number - say four. A becomes E, J becomes N, Z becomes D and so on. The number is the key to the cypher here

example: "The dog is sick" becomes 'WKH GRJ LV VLFN" with the number three as they key.

2. Numbers. A=1, B=2, C-3 etc. all the way to Z=26. Messages can be written using those numbers. This cipher is probably too simple to use on its own; however, if you combine it with a Cesar code number, it can suddenly become very tricky indeed.

In the basic method, "The dog is better" would be "20 8 5-4 15 7- 9 19- 2 5 20 20 5 18," which looks difficult but isn't. Add a Cesar cipher of 3, however, and the message becomes "3 23 11 8 - 7 18 10- 12 22- 5 8 23 8 21," which should overheat the brain.

3. Alphabet Ciphers. There are any number of these. Most of them depend on the way the alphabet is written out - agreed beforehand between the spies.

With this sequence, "How are you?" would become "UBJ NER LBH?"

4. Morse Code is the most famous substitution cipher ever invented. It was thought up by inventor Samuel F. B. MOrse.

How "Scammers" cheat the Post Office!

Some people who may be considered "cheaters" mail letters unstamped in the knowledge that they would be delivered anyway - postage due to the recipient. Some notorious people had been mailing personal letters this way, but some people had been doing it on bill payments too. So the post office changed its policy. It stopped delivering letters without stamps. A letter with a stamp - even one-cent stamp - is delivered. A letter with no stamp is returned to the sender.

Naturally, this had just opened a new way of cheating. The scam is very simple. Letters can now be mailed for free by switching the positions of the delivery address and the return address. If there is no stamp on the envelope, it will be "returned"--that is, delivered to the address in the upper left corner--which is where the sender wanted it to go in the first place. That simple.

What an ingenious idea by these scammers. Beware, don't ever do this.

The payphone "Scam!"

This is how some notorious people scam the payphone system, to get a free call. But let me say this outright, I am not giving you this information in order for you to act it out. It's against the law, and you may be prosecuted. But here, I would just like to show you how these people make this scam, for learning and information purposes only.

First of all, this is an easy way to get quick messages to someone from a payphone either LD or when you don't have change to make a call. It works best using 1-800-collect. Some other carriers will also work, assuming they are computerized routing of the collect call.

1. They call 1-800-collect (or other carrier). They enter the # of the recipient of the message when prompted.

2. When they are asked to say their name, they have about *6* seconds to record their message. Examples include:

"It's Martin, call me at 555-1212"

"My plane will get in at 6:55 pm, Terminal A, American Airlines"

"Dad, come pick me up at the Gym doors aof the school."

3. Allow the receiving party to reject the call. They will receive the message, and can hang up. But the one calling must stay on the line until they are told that their call has been refused. That will ensure that the other end heard their message. Also, the "name" will be repeated twice, so if there is a date or phone number in it, the receiving party will hear it a second time if they miss it.

Coin Tricks (The Easy Vanish)

The Easy Vanish is simple to perform yet very deceptive. Hold both hands palms up with a coin on the second and third fingertips of the right hand. Hold the coin in place with the right thumb.

Now turn that hand over and slap the coin into the palm of the left hand. Close the fingers of the left hand over the fingers of the right; withdraw the right hand, but hang onto the coin, using your thumb. Drop your right hand down by your side and reveal an empty left hand! Got it?

I was reading a newspaper called "The Observer", the July 30, 2008 issue and something caught my attention at the last page. The title of the article is "Ten Smart Ways To Save Money on Groceries." 4. Printable Coupons: Check out coupon Web sites such as www.Coupons.com and www.SmartSource.com, which let you select the coupons you want to print.

5. Favorite Brands: Frequent the Web sites of your favorite brands. You can often find money-saving printable coupons right on the site or you can sign up for special offers by mail or e-mail.

6. Coupons for Sale: If you spot a great sale and want to double up on your savings, go online to a site like www.TheCouponClippers.com, which lets you order coupons for a few cents each.

7. Stack Coupons: Some retailers offer coupons that cn only be used at their stores. You can use these coupons along with manufacturer's coupons on the same product for extra savings. By doubling up, you can sometimes get products for free or nearly free.

8. Double And Triple Coupon Deals: Some grocery stores double or triple coupons and sometimes and sometimes only on certain days of the week. Check the newspaper for which days they're multiplied.

9. Rebates and Free-bates: Look for rebates and free-bates, which refund you the full purchase price. You can make money in some cases when you use a coupon and then get a full-price freebate. Just don't forget to send in the forms.

10. Money-Saving Blogs: Check out money saving blogs that share with readers shopping tips and advice as well as coupons, free samples and round-ups of the best deals at the grocery store. Two to check out are www.MoneySaving-Mom.com and www.CouponCravings.com.
